Digging for Shawn

I always assume that everyone who reads this blog also follows the videos over in nerdfighteria, but maybe that isn't the case, so briefly:

There's a nerdfighter named Shawn Ahmed who moved to Bangladesh a couple years ago hoping to do something about global poverty with 300 dollars he'd saved for an XBox 360. Shawn has used his immense talent for making videos (and immense patience, which is required when uploading them from Bangladesh) to change the relationship between rich and poor in the world. (Watch this video to see youtube at its best.)

Our friends at iPower (aka athenewins) are trying to momentarily draw the attention of the Internet away from rollerblading kittens and toward decreasing worldsuck--specifically by making people aware of Shawn's work. You can help out by digging Shawn and bumping him up on Reddit.

Wooo! I've been watching the article on digg since 2.

It's been amazing to see Shawn's project grow from that xbox money to what it is now. Absolutely beautiful and inspiring.

Also, I just went and read through some of the P4A comment spam on that video. Good times. :)

I know what i'm going to say/write has nothing to do with Shawn and his amazing awesomeness...but it does have to do with suckness... so let me tell you my story of suckness(because you probably don't ever read/reply to emails sent to you)

So, for christmas last year i really really wanted your book "an abundance of katherines" (i hadn't read it, but i had read "looking for alaska" and liked it so i assumed that your other books would be good too)Well i didn't get it for christmas because my mom couldn't find a bookstore, so i put it on hold at the library. My mom actually had to go w/my brother to another city so he could get lifeguard training. and came back, and appartently had either read the beginning of katherines or alaska (i'm not sure which one, she wasn't very clear...) and said i couldn't read it, or any of your other books anymore because it used the F word too much, and now i can't read any book that she finds the F word in (she literally takes my books and flips through them) so i am quite angry and super sad about that and don't really know what to do.... so yeah... my life sucks right now (any ideas on how to make it less suckish???)

It's so amazing how much Shawn's project has grown. I've only donated a little money, but I like that I was a very tiny part of a large project.

On a different note, you should e-mail Shauna's mom and tell her why she should be able to read your books. I can't tell you how sad it makes me that a nerdfighter can't read your books, especially for such a silly reason.

Yes, please help get that article more diggs and redits! Shawn has already reported increased traffic and donations from what has been done today. Just so you know, there is another event set up for January 28th. (We found out about each other quite late and tried to sync our projects, but ended up just trying to encourage people to participate in both.)

Thanks for posting about I Power's event, John!
