John, this has nothing to do with the topic, so forgive me. I am a nerdfighter, and I learned about your books through your videos. I liked them quite a bit, which was a surprise to me, because I don't generally like new books. I pick them up, but I put them down too quickly because I don't like the writing or the characters. I like old books, the kinds English teachers assign in high school. Maybe people and writers were more interesting in the past, in ways they are not anymore. Or maybe its just the writing style. Whatever the reason, I can't seem to be able to read books that most people recommend (like Life of Pi). I was hoping that maybe you could recommend some recently published (like in the last 10 years) books that you like, for both adults and young adults. Please? THank you :)

Hey John loved the video!

To Sarah: He sort of already has.
Some more recent book that John recommends are the Octavian Nothing books by M.T. Anderson, as well as books by his writer friends Maureen Johnson and Scott Westerfeld. He also had a blog post earlier this year titles "Recent Reads" (I think) that you should check out. Also, check out the Nerdfighters Book Club!
I also can personally relate to what you're saying about teen books. Some of my favorite more classic-style books are The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel and The Time-Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Hope you enjoy them!

This was amazing.

I just bought a book in St. Louis called "Famous Last Words," and immediately thought of you and Looking for Alaska.

I also like Carl Panzram's last words, and George Sanders.

A little more morose than the ones you chose, but still good. :]

Love it! I think this was one of my favorite Vlogbrothers videos in a while. I've sent it to about ten of my friends. I want to have really awesome last words, or even just really desperately honest ones like Pancho Villa.

I think James K. Polk's last words were slightly more romantic than W. C. Fields', but I can't say why. They're just simpler.

^_^ That was awesome. Finals week just got a little less depressing. Well, at least for tonight. >.<

That was hilarious! :D

I am sharing the Darwin one with my school's Academic Decathlon team...(oddly enough, our packets say nothing about his last words...XD)

John Green I blame you for making me a quotephile. Ever since I read Looking for Alaska about three years ago I have been hooked on quotes in general and famous last words. The following are some of my favorites that were not in your video.

"More light! More light!"-Goethe

"I am dying, sir, of one hundred good symptoms"- Alexander Pope

"So here it is at last, the distinguished thing." Henry James

"Go on, get out. Last words are for fools who haven't said enough"- Karl Marx

As I was typing the above I realized that you probably know most of these already. (Shakes head in disappointment)

These are quotes that I enjoy in general.

"'If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain.' Do you know which "philosopher" siad that? Dolly Parton. And people say she's just a pair of tits."-David Brent (The Office)-British

"People who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction, and anyone who insists on remaining in a state of innocence long after that innocence is dead turns himself into a monster."-James Baldwin

"Mistakes are just successes that you just mess up."-Michael Scott (The Office)-American

John,
I know this has nothing to do with the video but I had to say it.

Unicorn or Zombie?

Unicorn, obviously.

"My horn will pierce the sky?"
How can a zombie ever beat that?

I would have thought the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria feature in to your last words...and Scotts...and now I'm wondering when Maureen will include the Archduke in one of her books.

*tears up*

And here I thought I wasn't special.

On a totally seperate note, awesome video. I'll have you know I'm totally part of that FB group for Alaska Young.

Favourite book ever. :)

Keep writing, please. <3

Well, what about 'Chains' by Laurie Halse Anderson? That book is amazing, one of the best I've read this year. Also the New York Times, they did a review and they reviewed it with the second Octavian Nothing book.

Ha, Picasso's last words were really "drink to me"? I always thought that was just the Paul McCartney song...
Anyway, I think you're a fantastic writer and an overall hilarious guy. Go write more books about nerds. Or anagrams. Or a combination of the two.

P.S. Holden Caulfield is totally not self-involved :D
