My unsolicited advice is that no matter what, be extra super nice to your wife. I managed to give birth to three children from two different husbands, both of whom were selfish pr*ks. Now is the time to put her first, in case you are used to putting yourself first. I used to watch the videos all the time, but I guess I prefer reading--silly me. If you thought the *dog* was cool and fun, wait till you have the baby...

Not actually commenting on the vid - though, you know, that is completely wonderful, and congratulations to you both (and I may have made noises only audible to dogs when I heard the first time) -- but am writing because of your "why don't you subscribe on YouTube?" note on the end.

I did, in fact, try to subscribe to YouTube, just so I could post a "that's wonderful!" comment on this vid when you first posted it.

But I noticed something -- when subscribing to YouTube, the site requires you to pick a gender, and it gives you two options: male or female.

Normally, I wouldn't have recognized this as a problem, since I'm a cisgendered woman. But I also have an account on LiveJournal, which recently blew up over the same issue. (LiveJournal previously had a "choose not to specify" option -- and now does again, since people made a fuss.)

That requirement is there, of course, because YouTube (and LiveJournal) are trying to have easy demographic data they can give to advertisers. But gender isn't binary, and it's hurtful for people who aren't cisgendered to be asked to slot themselves into categories they aren't really part of... and if they can't do that, then they're not welcome.

This is probably tl;dr, but that's why I'm not subscribing to you on YouTube, and instead am clicking over once a week to watch the Vlog Bros vids.

(I tried, fruitlessly, to figure out how I could complain about this to a person @ YouTube, but as you may have noticed the site doesn't make it easy to find names or contact info.)

I am not attempting to make this your problem -- since what is actually your problem is the impending small malaria-hating person who will be joining your life -- but since you asked, that is why.

Hugs and kisses and best wishes,
-Rachel

John, mazel tov on the baby. Also, I've been wondering how NaNoWriMo went for you?

PS to my previous comment: that is, I have been hoping you might write or comment on what your experience of NaNoWriMo was like, and what you think of it having gone through the process (whether or not you made it to the 50k words).

Congrats to you and Sarah! I have a two year old; it's a crazy and fun journey! I think the hardest thing about being a parent is dealing with medical stuff. Being responsible for another human's well-being is, well...hard! :) But being a parent is a wonderful gift. It is an experience that, as you say in Paper Towns, opens up one's window into oneself and one's partner. The light shines through the cracks a bit more. :) It provides an interesting new lens on the world! (Well, after the first 6 months when the fogginess of lack of sleep starts to disappear.) I can't wait to hear/see how having a little one enters into your vlogs. CONGRATS! Best of luck to you - that's so exciting!

Congratulations to you and the yeti.

Note: the hormones that go along with pregnancy will push the yeti to the brink of insanity. She may fake it well, but she needs you to be really really really really kind...and probably a little psychic. Also, sleep now. As much as you can.

When the baby comes and sleep deprivation sets in, remember, the shadow people aren't real. Just saying.

Also when the baby comes...they aren't quite as fragile as they look. You can touch them and hold them and when you change a diaper, their legs rarely spontaneously fall off despite the fact that they look like they will.

Also, don't worry...eventually, it will grow a butt.

What fantastic news! Congrats on the mini-nerdfighter-to-be (because I think that, maybe, you can't really become a nerdfighter until you've entered this external world...although this is debatable)!

Congratulations again, John!

But a completely unrelated question: at 3:16 in the video, that orange and cream[ish] book just to the right of your head... is that Catcher in the Rye? It looks like a copy I got from the library a while back. Just curious.

DFTBA!

I agree with David, I'm also curious if you liked NaNoWriMo. This was the second year I did it, and I love it. What did you think?

Hopefully Willy takes it better than my cat did. She is petrified of my seven month old. We have to sprinkle anxiety medicine on her food.

I am sure when he starts chasing her I will have to up the dosage.

Congratulations, John and Yeti!

Hey, I don't know if you're worried about what happens when you mix writing and baby, but I WAS. Now I think having a baby (he is now 14 months old) actually improved my writing. Slowed it down, yeah, but also improved it, because there's just a lot of time spent awake and thinking and kind of landlocked. I just read an interview with Marilynne Robinson, who said that she writes almost everything in her head, and what she puts down on paper is actually her final draft. Which sounds amazing and impossible, but I don't know...maybe if I had a SECOND baby, I could work on that.

Again, congratulations! It will be wonderful.

Okay, first visit to your site, and are you always like this? Because if you are...I think I love you. In a I-know -you're-married-as-am-i kinda way.
Congrats on the baby. And I completely understand the change of location. My office turned into a baby room almost 2 years ago. Congratulations.
