(I know I missed by BEDA yesterday; I'll make it up with two tomorrow.)

Just a random thought; wouldn't dimming the screen around videos save huge amounts of energy? (Considering the number of videos that are watched each day on YT)

My english class is currently reading Paper Towns, and we're coming to hear you speak on Friday the 17th. I'm really looking forward to it!

Yeah, so, I'll be emailing you (yet again) about the Philadelphia gig. You've been warned.

did you have to get permission from john darnielle to use the quote from game shows touch our lives at the beginning of paper towns? have you ever met him?

i had no idea that you were a mountain goats fan when i started the book and reading that quote (which is my favorite pair of lines from one of my favorite mountain goats songs) was super exciting.

Ok, it's been a long time since I looked for Lucky Charms or their ilk (obviously NOBODY on YouTube is having much success selling them to me, so don't feel bad), but isn't Count Chocula the vampire of the cereal aisle? Do they still make him? And his friends Boo-Berry and Frankenberry?

Anyhow, would not the Nerdfighters buy Lucky Charms if you so commanded? If YouTube expresses any doubt, I'll draw you up a bar graph to demonstrate your measurable impact on the Peeps industry...

John, you are advertising. I can't tell you how often I've clicked on the "john green--Realtor in Naperville, Plainfield and surrounding areas" ad at the bottom of your videos.

So I don't know if you're making YouTube much money, but I do know that there's a really nice colonial with two and half baths available in the Oswego area.

It's very possible that many vloggers could move to a completely new site following the commercialization of Youtube.

I don't know if we can ask questions, but I have a question. Is it a sing that I've spent way too much time in Nerdfighteria if I see Nerdfighter jokes in 3 quarters of the books I read? if so, is that bad?

Thanks for having the Melbourne Nerdfighter gathering! This New Zealand Nerdfighter has just booked her flights!

Can't wait to meet you there.

At April 12, 2009 , Blogger Erika Powell said...

I understand that youtube has to do this and as long as I can upload my vlogs still I don't really care that I have to click on an extra tab. And for the record you could make me buy lucky charms. You make me buy books. Maybe they just aren't advertising the right things!

I will be at the Melbourne gathering. I can not wait.

Please answer at least one of these. Thanks in advance. You are my hero.

What happens to the money in Lindsey's and Hollis' swear jar?

Where can I get a hardcover copy of Looking for Alaska? (It's the only one I don't have in hardcover.)

How do you pronounce "bufriedo"?

What is your favorite movie?

Did you really narrate the Paper Towns audiobook? (I listened to the preview on iTunes and it doesn't sound like you.)

And last, but not least: YOU SMOKED?!?!? WHY ON EARTH?!?

Did you eat any Peeps on Easter??

Who write the song that you and Hank sang on December 31 2007?

Interesting to hear your perspective on this, considering that you are one of the most frequent content providers on YouTube.

I've written a piece about the situation, which I've linked back to your video, here. May prove interesting to some people looking for alternatives.

What do you think about Amazon's new policies for "adult content?"

Article with more info here.

Essentially, many books with GBLTQ content (including YA novels) have been stripped of their sales rankings as Amazon implemented a filter to exclude "adult" material from turning up on basic site searches.

Curious (and hopeful) to hear your thoughts on this.

PLEASE come to New Zealand (Auckland) while you're going to Australia.

(I hope this doesn't come off as insulting, because I'm a fan of yours...)

Q: I've noted that you sometimes make off-handed remarks about Stephenie Meyer's books -- Edward/his grating perfection/ etc.. But I don't hear you slamming other YA books, you either praise them ad nauseum (Octavian Nothing) or don't mention them at all.

You've classified yourself as writing for "smart" teenagers, and I'm guessing that you consider SM books to be not as "smart." But many teens have Twilight and LFA on their bookshelves and like them equally.

Yours have heavy duty themes. Hers are page turners. Both have their merits. I think your struggle to figure out SM's success is your
tragic flaw. Is it?

Just wanted to leave some followup for my question as more info has become available.

Here's a list of books that have been affected:

And here's an LA Times article; the bigger news sources are starting to pick up the story now.

Hi John.

Question - What if user content creators on youtube and other sties could choose who a company they would like to advertise during their segments, like say, and organic produce farm that sells online instead of nasty breakfast cereal that turns American children into big fat lards with rotten teeth? Wouldn't user created marketing be the bomb? Hey, it works for Super Bowl ads! Then hosting sites like youtube and the content creators could be in business together sharing advertising revenue. Thoughts?

Any plans to talk in New York State (But not in NYC)?

What is your least favorite book and why?

At April 13, 2009 , Blogger Anna Swenson said...

So that whole BlogTV show where you talked about how YFN was maybe making David Foster Wallace references, you already knew, because you wrote it?

That's a little sneaky. It just makes me wonder what of the chapters are you and what of them are her. Additionally, you are quite a good actor, I was fooled.

The chapters are eloquent and beautiful, but I liked it better when you were solving this impossible thing with us and not creating this impossible thing for us to solve.

Any chance you could come to Mississippi? About maybe 5% (it's small but we're a powerful 5%!!) of people in my high school love to read, and those people have read your books, and anxiously wait for a chance to someday meet their favorite authors. (We had Jay Asher and Laurie Halse Anderson in Oxford, MS, but I was in St. Louis and missed it) I think my teacher's friend at Square Books in Oxford has tried to get in contact with you but I'm not sure if it worked. If you ever read this...would you consider?

I know you're not doing a Q&As Blog next time, but I have a random question. I watch your live BlogTv shows (most of the time, school hours permitting) and you are always reading some REALLY GREAT poetry. But everytime I hear your poetry reading, I never really catch a book/collection/author/title. So I was wondering if you have any poetry collections/books that you would suggest for someone to maybe, borrow from the library.

Would you and Hank ever consider hosting your videos somewhere else?

Do you think it takes more skill to write a book that is completely fictional than a book that is semi-autobiographical?

A big fat yay for Australia but an almighty boo for Melbourne. I'm just suffering from state envy. Oh Perth, why must you be so far away and cut off from everything?

At April 15, 2009 , Blogger Leah said...

Excited about Melbourne. Very excited, but tired so the exclamation marks aren't coming out.

Also, this is a little nit-picky or whatever, I think you mean the State Library. And when you tell people how to get there, it's across the road from Melbourne Central station. I love the State Library. And Melbourne.
