When Children's Literature Dresses Up

The Newbery/Caldecott Awards banquet is the fanciest event in children's literature. It is, come to think of it, the only fancy event in children's literature, except when we, like, throw a prom.

Every year I have been invited to the banquet, I've worn a suit. (I only have one non-seersucker suit, but it's nice.) But this year I packed light and only brought a Gap jacket. And sure enough, the Fashion Police showed up.

(I'm at 2:51. And I'm out. Congrats to Laurie Halse Anderson, who when she is not busy being a lovely person and an award winning author is apparently a fashion designer.)

As you look down in ignominy and say, “The Gap…”

Sorry you were out, but the way they edited the video made your part really funny.

I can guarantee I would have been out. I probably would have shown up with a white button-down long-sleeved shirt (not tucked and most likely wrinkled), neck tie slightly askew, and a fedora cocked to the right side like my grandpappy use to do (that rhymed incredibly well. I should make that into a swing/jazz song and call it “Grandpappy’s Fedora.”)

As amusing as that was, I feel somewhat sorry for you. You look no less dashing than usual to me, John- but then again, I can't for the life of me see why one shouldn't wear socks with sandals.

Hey what be wrong with the gap? :)

I think my husband's entire closet came from the Gap. Oh wait. He did just go to J Crew clearance for the first time.

You look great!
