FAQs about the Looking for Alaska Movie
Before we get to the day's proper blogging, My dear friend Dean has recently taken a break from constantly complaining that I don't link to his web site often enough to begin improving this Web site in various ways. For instance, I now apparently have an RSS and/or Atom feed, whatever those are. More exciting improvements forthcoming.
Also: Tuesday is the last day for you to enter the Contest Contest, wherein the person who suggests the best idea for a Contest to give away copies of "An Abundance of Katherines" will themselves win a free autographed advanced copy of "An Abundance of Katherines"
But about that movie: Lately I have gotten a lot of questions about the "Looking for Alaska" movie, and so I thought I would answer some.
Q. Is "Looking for Alaska" being made into a movie?
A. That depends on what your definition of is is. About a year ago, the movie rights for "Alaska" were sold to Paramount, with Josh Schwartz (who created The O.C.) agreeing to write and direct the movie. The producers are also really great. Things are moving forward, but it will be quite a while before a movie starts shooting, so don't start standing in line outside your local theater just quite yet. (Incidentally, did you know that famous author Cecil Castellucci stood in line for like four months for Star Wars: Episode I?)
Q. How do you feel about the idea of "Alaska" being a movie?
A. Good. I think Josh is a very good writer, which helps keep me from worrying. But regardless, you can't worry too much about these things. To me, a book and the movie it is "based" on are only tangentially related. I've never been worried about the movie being an accurate adaptation of the book--partly because I'd rather have the movie be good than faithful, and partly because I don't think it's possible to make an adaptation that's "true" to a book. There's no way Alaska will look on screen like she looks in your head, is what I'm saying. And that's okay.
Q. Who is going to play Alaska? Pudge? Takumi? Do you think they'll cast the movie with people from The O.C.? Will Mischa Barton play Alaska? Etc.
A. I have no idea who will play anyone, but I rather doubt the cast of The O.C. will be featured in "Alaska."
Q. Have you met Josh Schwartz?
A. I have.
Q. Is he really really hot?
A. He's a nicely put together fellow.
Q. Is he hotter than Seth Cohen? Does he look like Seth Cohen?
A. Let's talk about issues of substance. (Also, this is not really one of my areas of expertise.)
Q. Will there be any open casting calls?
A. I don't know. But if there are, I will certainly let you know via this very blog.
Q. Do you know what's going to happen next year on The O.C.?
A. No. Honestly I don't even know exactly what happened this year on The OC, because we're always busy on Thursdays and so I wait for the DVDs to come out.
Q. Marissa dies.
A. Thanks, jerkface.
Q. Everyone says that Hollywood is dirty and horrible. Do you agree?
A. I don't know. It has its dirty and horrible parts. And I would never move there on account of how it seems to work out poorly for people in my family. But some of the writers I like the most live and work in Hollywood, and through the "Alaska" movie project I've met some people who I really admire. My experience has been very, very positive.
Q. So far.
A. Right. So far. You're quite pessimistic, aren't you?
Q. It's my nature.
A. Fair enough. Any other questions?
Q. I think that's it.
A. Okay. Well if anyone else has any questions, they should feel free to leave them in comments.

That's a dirty lie. I never stopped complaining that you don't link to me enough.
Anyway, I'm disappointed to have discovered just now that iMDb has restricted free access to films "in development." I'd been enjoying the Looking for Alaska message board, particularly the threads concerning casting.
Last I checked, though, I believe the consensus picks were: Shannon Elizabeth as Alaska, Bruce Willis as Miles, President Palmer as Takumi, and Dakota Fanning as the Colonel.
I agree that these are all perfect, but I'm on the fence about having the Weekday Warriors played by snakes on a plane.
I think the film's setting should be relocated from Culver Creek to the planet Naboo. All the weekday Warriors could be played by Gungans. Then at least Alaska and the Colonel's hatred of them would make more sense.
Oh silly. It wasn't 4 months. It was 4 YEARS!!!
Lou Rawls Star is my bed.
I don't think I'll be able to see this movie. It won't work without Wes Anderson.
Actually, nothing works without Wes Anderson.
Looking for Alaska is quite emotional. How are they going to feature Alaska getting hit by the steering wheel?
I was wondering if you (as in John Green) Could possibly give us any idea how to contact Mr. Josh Schwartz? It would be a huge help, because, I am looking to audtion for somehting in the movie. Wether it be an extra or alaska her self. I am a hope full actress and I adore your book so it would be excellent of you to kindly post this infromation if you have it.
Like Candice said i CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE the book was incredible i loved it i hope the movie is as good as the book
So I have read the book 50 million times. Thought it was amazing. Cry every time. Well anyway, I hope the movie is good though I do hope it to be faithful.
But honestly, reading the first comment about actors.
Bruce. Willis. As. Miles. You have got to be kidding me! He's young! Willis is old! Ughgldkas;djsd I dunno my opinion, don't know much who the other actors are. But okie dok =)
i'm doing a book report and i have to make a movie poster. a cast list would be wonderful if you have any recent news.
and if you could e-mail (goosenotchicken@yahoo.com) it to me i'd b forever grateful, and it would make my day.
I swear to god, if they cast Emma Roberts as Alaska, I will shoot myself. They need to find an unknown actor for everyone. If we all have ideas about who the actual person is, playing the part, then it will take away from the characters. I think they should just find people who have never been in a movie before, see if they're good, and then put them in the movie. No people from the OC, no one from stupid teen movies like Mean Girls. People that will actually mean something to you who are actually right for the part who can accurately depict the characters, even if it's not exactly what we expected. Because Alaska Young is the movie. And if Mischa Barton or someone like that gets the part, well Jesus Christ, that ruins the entire film.
this book is the most amazing book i have ever read and i really cant wait for the movie to come out. i'd love to go to the auditions for this film...it would be great. i agree that the actors shouldn't really be already known cause the people in the book are students. so they cant really be older, famous actors. it would look better if they were just normal kids chosen especially for the movie.
Ali J...you do know Dean is kidding right...I mean, you don't actually think he's serious...? Dakota Fanning is a twelve year old little blond girl.....he's making a joke.
Anyway. People are discussing Shia for Pudge. Don't know if that's a good idea or not because I think he's gotten too old, as much as I like his acting...
shia as pudge would be... weird. he's not... pudge-like. just not at all.
i agree with the whole unknown-actors thing. for the 'gang' anyway, maybe the eagle and hyde could be a relatively known actor but alaska, pudge, takumi and the colonel should be unknowns. no disney kids or any of that crap.
im sorry to the mischa barton fans, but there is no way in hell she could play alaska. the girl has a personality of a plank and alaska is such a vibrant character. they need an unknown person to play her, someone real and gritty and who has a special and different kind of beauty. not some shallow, boring member of the hollywood brat pack.
I definitely know where they should shoot the movie. A little place called Indian Springs Village, AL. It's a pretty awesome place.
it would be fantastic if you could post any casting call information as soon as you find some.
btw, i absolutely love Looking For Alaska. the book is beautifully written and evokes a bunch of emotions, and you couldn't have developed alaska's character any better. you made her personality so vivid.
Umm... I think yall are weird. I think the unknown actor/ actress with would be cool, but alot of movies I've seen with unknow actors / actresses suck. Like they suck alot.
It needs to be some one that can seriously act. Everyone should be in tears in the theater. Not just me, hints I am a sucker for sad movies.
The book was amazing. If my mom knew what was in the book she would have NEVER given it to me. Thank goodness she only read the blurb.
I cried all three times I read the book. That doesnt seem like alot but I seriously closed the book on the last page and opened it to the first page. AMAZING! I cried so hard I had to put the book down, which was really hard to do because I couldnt stop reading!!
I cant wait for the movie!!! My friends think I'm obsesive. Maybe I am. Who knows...?
please please please find an unknown for Alaska. I really agree with a person who said before that it should NOT be any from any of the teen chick movies that are out now. Of course, no unknown will work either. Everyone has a different picture in the their head of what she looks like and ... you can't please everyone.
Does anyone know where you can find updates on the movie? I've been looking around, but I haven't seen any. IMDB is limiting to IMDB Pro users only.
i thing an amazing person to play alaska would be Mandy Musgrave who plays ashley on south of nowhere.
To be completely honest, I am going to be very picky as to whether or not I like this movie. I absolutely loved to book, and, in my opinion, movies do not usually match up. Due to this reasoning, I agree with everyone who said an unknown would be excellent for Alaska. However, this girl would seriously need to be able to act. Alaska is an amazing character, and I would be very impressed if someone could play her as she is in the book. If anybody has any information about casting or auditions, would you please leave a comment about it? By the way, Dean's (1st comment) casting was funny. Excellent choices...
Looking for Alaska is my all time favorite book. I have read it several times. When I describe this book to friends who ask me about it I tell them I can't describe it. I tell them to read it once set it down for a few months and then read it again because it's like a movie you can watch over and over again.
My opinion about the whole movie thing is...it will be Great.! or I will turn it off 10 minutes in. I am really picky about this one.
Hopefully the movie shows the true meanings and feelings that come out in the book.
I think the producers of the movie should take into acount that this book has given many people inspiration for their lives and it will be hard to top.
"I go to seek a Great Perhaps."
Will Looking for Alaska have a sequel? Like what happens to Pudge in his continuing years at Culver Creek?
dean was making a joke. Ha ha?
anyways, if alaska turns into a typical hollywood movie, it will be quite dissapointing. i completely agree that it should be cast with unknowns, or if not unknowns, just genuinely talented actors. evan rachel wood, i think, would make a good alaska. shia wouldn't be too bad, but they could do better.
first of all id just like to say that this book is the most honest and real piece of literature that i have ever read...in short looking for alaska means the world to me and i have taken so much from it and learned so much about life from it. when i found out looking for alaska was going to be made into a movie and seriously considered busting into tears. personally i feel that allowing hollywood or anyone for that matter to create a movie based on the book will only deface it's value and make it a mockery no movie can ever replace the feeling and the honesty of the book and it disgusts me that someone will even try.
any idea when it is going to be released?
Okay.
FYI to everyone out there that's freaking about the whole "book to movie" comparisons.
Helloooo!
If you'll just let the book and the movie be two separate things you'll probably enjoy it a whole lot more.
It works the same with a lot of books.
Yes.
Some movies leave out details from the books they're based on (emphasis on the words "based on").
But they have their own unique qualities that make them their own product.
If every movie based on a book had every detail included, the movies would be several hours long.
SO chill out and let the movies be movies and the books be books.
John Green said it himself.
He'd rather the movie be good on it's own that be faithful to the book's storyline.
Thank you.
There's my 2 cens.
Take it or leave it.
Either way, I'm out.
Peace.
I am, of course, going to be one of those crazy people who go I LOVE THIS BOOK!
Which I do. It's one of those books where the ending makes you see a different take on things, the way you have to sit and just think for an hour. I am also glad they are making it a movie, however, I defiantly doubt they will capture the real emotions portrayed in the book.
With that being said, I am still super happy that it's going to be a movie, because I'm one who can't read a book twice, yet can't seem to get enough of certain books.
So it's really good for me.
Also, Just want to say, I am defiantly going to be one waiting forever just for the movie to come out! I can't wait till the details come out(castings, and such).
I am so excited(As I've possibly said this whole comment).
So here's to the enthusiasm that went into this right when I found out about the movie!
((Honestly, this made my night!))
With my luck and the way Hollywood casting's going these days (ahem, Twilight), we'll be looking at a Jamie Lynn Spears version of Alaska Young.
And then I die.
Jamie Lynn can't be Alaska, she's pregnant, silly ;)
Seriously though, I agree that Pudge's gang should be played by unknown/lesser known actors.
And I can't stand Shia LeBeouf :S
I read "Looking For Alaska" and loved it. It made me cry. Strangely, I like books that can do that. I'm excited for the movie, but also not. Usually movies tend to mess things up. Another of my favorite books, "Twilight", is being made into a movie also. I hope they both turn out alright. If not, I'd feel like the people who make the movies are destroying wonderful works of art. =/
Oh, and I'd like to agree with "anonymous" about the casting of Twilight. They should have used unknown people; it would make it much more convincing and enjoyable. Also, COULD EDWARD POSSIBLE BE ANY UGLIER?!?!?!?!?!?! ROBERT PATTINSON?!?!?!?!? EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh. Bleh. I was SO disappointed I almost cried. They've already destroyed the movie.
Sorry, John. I know you probably don't care about this issue. I just had to post in agreement with "anonymous".
I totally love this book, make it into a movie!
yesh yesh yesh :)
Hearing that Looking for Alaska is being made into a movie has made me feel a variety of things, just as the book did. I feel that watching the movie on screen will take away the effect that the book has on all of us. We all read the book and build relationships with each of the characters; ones that can not be shared with anybody else. That's what upsets me. I'm also afraid (and I hate to say that word, afraid) that the movie will turn out to be nothing like the book. And quite frankly, I can't handle that...
Do we know if the movie has been casted yet? I would absolutely love to find that out as soon as possible... Alaska Young is my idol (except for her demise of course) and I would give anything to be her...
Hopefully everything turns out as well as we expect it to be. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks.
michael cera= pudge.. what do you think?
Michael Cera = Pudge = YES.
He's a bit on the short side if you want to be nitpicky, but he to me, personally, he seems like the kind of actor that can play a believable Miles while still being fiarly well-known in Hollywood at the same time.
With the plus side that he'll bring a built-in fan base to the movie.
Michael Cera as pudge. please!!
ooh, and Remembering Sunday, by All Time Low should be in the soundtrack. and possibly Mayday Parade? I'm inn love with that book...before i read it,i never really had a favorite book. Now i do. its amazing. i'm looking forward to the movie, but i'm also afraid. I dont want my view of the book to be spoiled by the movie. However, its a risk i'm willin to take. Anything for Alaska.
Oh, and nobody stupid like Emma roberts playing Alaska, i'm begging you.
If anyone want to talk about the book/movie with me, email me at
nj2694@yahoo.com
but put something about LFA or something in the subject line, so i know who u are =]
Well its July 19, 2008 and its been 2 years since this Blog was posted. So is their a certain date yet for the movie? I'm so excited about their being a movie on one of my favorite books and i'm dying to know when its coming out! And if anyone knows if there's an open casting call please let me know! my email is cherryicee32@aim.com or just reply to this comment.
thanx,
Lola
gasp! the above comment was left in the future!
I'm pretty sure that it's going to be released at the end of 2010, or the beginning of 2011.
so im pretty sure John that you would love Amber Heard as Alaska. Just think about it and take a look into it. As long as she is the most beautiful girl on screen, im sure the movie will be great
ive been so excited for the alaska movie ever since i heard about it. and Josh Shwartz is amazing for creating the OC so i have no doubt that it would be a great film. is there any chance that they would bail on the movie and it wouldnt happen?
AARON YOO as TAKUMI would be great
I sincerly hope that the film had an indie feel to it and not a sheeny shiny gossipgirl/the OC feel...
I do love the OC & GG though.
Will the auditions be open and will they be exclusivly in America or will theyre be some in the UK?
Absolutely fantastic book!! AMAZING! I cried so much!!!! I LOVED IT!! Oh, when I finished reading, I was just like... I MISS ALASKA SO MUCH!! lol..... no joke. hehehe
Then when I found out it was being made into a movie, I was just like OMFG!! TOTALLY MADE MY DAY!!!! Coz I was thinking while I was reading it for a second time, This would make a freakin' awesome movie! I don't really care who they cast, I just can't wait to hear more about whats happening! When is filming starting? Do you know yet?
AAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!! I AM SOOO EXCITED!!
Love you work,
I AM DEFINITELY RECOMMENDING ALL MY FRIENDS TO READ LOOKING FOR ALASKA!!!

i totally agree with the fact as Michael Cera as Pudge
i can just really see him playing Miles. And the whole fact the the book is being made into a movie kind of makes me excited. i can understand completely why people wouldn't want it to be made into a movie, but i really just want to see how it would be perceived on film even if its not going to be exactly right (which we all know its not) but i still think that it will be a really great movie, and i totally recommended that book to all my friends and they love it too
Is the Looking for Alaska movie still happening and have they cast anyone for the movie yet?? I am a huge fan of the book it is seriously one of my favorite books. Does anyone know if they will be having open castings for the movie???
Email me at Moffittmel@aol.com with any information.
Thanks
I can TOTALLY see Kat Dennings being Alaska. She could sooo pull it off.
CAN'T WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!!!!
I hope there is an open casting in Canada as well as the US...Tell us more, John, tell us more!!!
Would you consider being in the movie? If so, who would you be?
John, you make me insanley happy. Like, goofy-smile-on-my-face happy. (:
Hopefully, the movie won't suck because that would be terribly bad. By the way, Twilight sucked big time. And John looks like John Mayer. To me, anyway.
i really enjoyed looking for alaska, although i enjoyed an abundance of katherines way more. john green is one of my favorite authors, along with f. scott fitzgerald.
oh Looking For Alaska is the best book that I have read!! it's fantastic.
I love read.. and I have read a lot of books but This book is incredible.. I don't know how to explain it...mmmh..it's magnetic!!
She is only a fucking Lunatic but what surprises me most is the fact that Alaska has been able to change my way of seeing the world.is only a book, but I think that the words of the books we teach everything. I think anyone who has read "alaska" has changed something in the soul.
Leave an inside track.
it's beautiful.
few writers do this: stained inside, that is what makes a writer a GOOD writer.
goodbye
An italian fan Sara
I read On wikipedea that they might Change the title To Famous Last Words. Is That true?
In my oppinion I don't think they should theres just something catchy about the title Looking For Alaska.
if there's still casting, i'd love to audition for whatever role, even lara or alaska. (:
and i really think that it should be unknown actors,
unless its micheal cera (:
and kat dennings would not be a good alaska
i just can't picture her as alaska at all.
ummm idk where you've been but Robert Pattinson is the hottest peice of british ass out there.
;-p haha
ok this book was fracking awsome! seriousely.......who doesnt wanna make out with a sweaty person while in a sleeping bag! thats my only dream in life! hahaha this was an amzeing story that truely grasped my attention with a choke-hold grip. I would wake-up in the mornig with the pages stuck to my face from where I'd fallen asleep at about 1 in the mornig from reading. John Green you're an amazeing author and I can't wait to read more of your work!
I just seriousely hope this doesn't turn into a big thing like twilight tho..... that kind of obsessive stuff sickens me. Seriousely theres limits people and lines that dont need to be crossed.
seacrest oouuutttt
John, I think your'e sexy. major hotness level.
ok so i just finished the book and i told my friends about the blo-job and the kissing seens and now they all want to read it haha. i really enjoyed the book though and i hope it will be made into a mocie c-ya
okayy.
1. I absolutely love this book. its the best book ever written and im soo glad my friend convinced me to read it.
2. whoever said the movie should be filmed at indian springs they are sooooo right.
and 3. they have to have open auditions so they can find raw talent and mold them into the characters.. and i know this person who would be absolutely perfect for pudge.. not even acting just himself he would fit the role.
this book made me cry it was fantastic and if it lost its charm in the movie and the rest of the world that hadnt read the book saw it as that, and learned to love it as that idk if i could live with that.. it would ruin things :(
I want to be Alaska in this movie more than anything, I would really like the casting information.
http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/64/m_6119c13ccbcb4ebb8bb2afde3fdbfa6a.jpg
I even have the perfect smirk!
I would really like to audition for Alaska or the girlfriend of Miles. If anyone has any information on open casting, pleeeease post it. Thank you!
has anyone heard anything about casting?
I would also rather have it be good than be completely faithful.
The way I feel about book adaptations, is that if it captures the feeling of it. So what if it leaves stuff out?
But for certain things I want a faithful adaptation, like Harry Potter.
But most of the time, I could care less how much they change. Fight Club is the shining example of that.
I am planning on being greatly let down by this movie, because I have never seen a movie that is as good as the book. I agree with the idea of having unknown actors. This is my favorite book ever and many of my friends compare me to Alaska. I hope I don't get let down!
First of all Amazing book. 2nd of all for the genre of the book a cast new to hollywood would be nice. Its a book about lerning who u are . why not give some fresh actors that chance
well, well, well. i read every single comment. yes, every SINGLE one. and some made me laugh (such as the first one) and some completely disgusted me (but i won't mention those)
first of all, i know everyone's basically said this but i LOVE that book. it has taught me so much about life--and death, and i honestly have changed because of it. it's one of those books you stumble upon only once in a lifetime. hah. i guess i can't explain that. well, on the subject of "Alaska" becoming a movie--weird. it obviously won't be as good as the book (i doubt anything ever will be) and you honestly shouldn't expect it to be. i totally agree with the whole undiscovered talent type of person to play Alaska. and there is no way in hell that shia lebouf could pull off Pudge--he's too hot. and too old. the Dakota Fanning being the Colonel jus made me rofl!!!!! wow. more than who plays Alaska i really want to know who will play the Colonel. ah. whatever. it will be a good movie just because it's based on an amazing book. >.<
This book was so amazing!
i called my bf when i got to the part when alaska died and i was blubbering! i cried so hard! my bf thought i was so stupid for crying but it just really hit me that i am the exact age as alaska was and i live right near indian springs. it made me feel that i actually knew alaska. now every time i drive down 119 or I-65, i think of them :)
i loved this book so much! its amazing!!!!
:D
Also...(i forgot to put this in the last comment)
1) John, if there will be a Looking For Alaska movie, i think the title should stay. The title is what made me want to read the book. It may make people want to see the movie as well.
2) If there is any possibility to film it at Indian Springs, do it. No other place would do it justice. Plus, instead of hiring extras, you could just use the kids that go to Springs.
3) Personally, i think it would be great if the directors and you picked kids from Alabama (specifically B-Ham) to play the main parts. We already have the slight accent that you'll need (Y'all)so we wont need to practice that. Plus, it would be great to pick people who are are not famous. That always makes a movie more interesting.
4) Just an idea:i was thinking of what song really fits Looking for Alaska as a "theme song" and I was listening to my ipod and found a song, "Young" by Hollywood Undead. I think it really displays what we go through as young adults, and it displays Alaska's struggles.
I love your writing John!!!
:D
When I was in 5th grade, my friend introduced me to Looking For Alaska, I was completly amazed by how good it was. Even if you think how a 5th grader understands this, I understood all of it. It was emotional, funny, and gross, but thats what made it such a good book, like the Twilight Series.(Hate the movie, Love the book)After reading Alaska's death, I couldn't think straight for a few days. It was a miserable ending. Then, when i finished the book, I was upset. I loved the book, so I didn't want it to end. But now, I will see how its gonna turn out as a movie. If it's completly ruined,(Like Twilight!)or if it'll turn out better. Hoping for the best.
For some reason, I always think of Alaska as Kaya Scodelario. Maybe it's the face. Or Effy. Either that or an unknown would be great. Anyways, Alaska was an amazing character and needs one hell of an actress to pull her off. It would not be as great if Alaska was just a pretty face. I mean, the characters make the book for me.
I think Taylor Momsen should be Alaska
PLEASE have open casting Calls, because i've read this book 13 times and each time i cry.. and i would LOVE to be in it, no matter what the part! <333
if it was the oc cast (which i would just love it) mischa barton would so be alaska even though alaska has dark brown hair, so maybe it could be rachel bilson though she would be great to play lara with an accent, willa holand would be the best person to play alaska, then ben mckenzie would deff be the colonel, and ryan donowho would certainly fit the character of takumi, while peter gallagher would be the eagle, and chris carmack as longwell chase, and then we are left with miles who can be played by the famous adam brody ......yes, perfect

I've always (always as in since about March when I read it) felt that out of your books, Looking For Alaska would work best adapted into a movie. Paper Towns is my favorite story, Hassan is my favorite character, and I'd like to see Alaska most on film. I think it could work well while being true to the book...maybe with a little narration, maybe none.
An Abundance of Katherines is the kind of book that just wouldn't feel right without all the descriptions and footnotes.
BTW when I saw the TAYLOR LAUTNER FOR TAKUMI, then googled "TAYLOR LAUTNER" I got ridiculously angry and almost threw my (mom's) laptop across the room. Why would anyone think that's ok?
...I always pictured him more as battle rapper, Dumbfoundead who's probably not an actor at all but a very similar character in terms of humor, rapping, and Asianocity...
i just finished the book yesterday & loved it (: i think that, looks wise, kaya scodelario would make a lovely alaska. i haven't seen anything that she's acted in, though, so i could be completely off-base here. she just looks almost exactly as i envisioned alaska as i read the book. (:
So excited for Looking For Alaska to be a movie.
Definitly let me knnow when casting calls are because my friend would be PERFECT to play the Colonel. It's INSANE how alike he is to the character!!!
i loved the book! can't wait for the movie.
hopefully they don't have shitty actors.
:D
Open casting call? When will this be happening?
You know a wierd thing? i always pictured victoria justice as alaska for some reason...
Wow. People are(were?) really freaking out over this.
Looking for Alaska Movie
Looking for Alaska Novel
--two different things--
Anyway, I always pictured Ronnie from Disturbia (Aaron Yoo?) as Takumi. Just saying.
Also, random thing here, I have issues picturing Alaska as a brunette. I see pictures people have photoshopped to look like her and I'm like "Why is her hair brown?" Then it's like "Oooh, I'm just abnormal and see her dirty blonde in my head. Duh!"
*-continuing-*
Personally, (if I see the movie-meaning if it happens) I will pretend it has no connection to the book. "Pure coincidence," I'll tell myself. Then, neither can be ruined...unless the movie actually sucks, of course.
Was just reading through the comments, imdb-ing the randomly mentioned actors and came across Kaya Scodelario. Can you say Drop.Dead.Gorgeous? I've never seen her act either but I know she's in a popular show called Skins.
I'm a boy-crazy girl but...<3
Kaya Scodelario for Alaska Young!
i think kaya scodelario would be perfect for alaska! Shes Great on skins and can do many levels of acting!
Taylor lautner would be horrible as Takumi! Takumi's asian for godsake. I don't want little cute actresses and actors. I hope they pick no names.
if you ask me an amazing cast would be
pudge: adam brody
alaska: sarah roemer
takumi: aaron yoo
Someone on here said they pictured Alaska as a dirty blonde... So do I! I'm not sure why... Maybe cause I saw her as kinda cool/badass and brunette girls don't really seem badass? Who knows. All I know is that I started reading the book for the first time a few nights ago, and I stayed up all night to finish it tonight.... Even in the beginning I loved Alaska. She was my favorite character!! I'm so sad right now, and I don't even know why!
But yeah... I hope they don't screw up the movie.
I also have always pictured her as a blonde. is there a general time that the movie is expected to come out...other than in 2010?
I also picture her as a blonde. is there any clue as to when the movie is expected to come out...other than 2010?
Wow, whoever said Kaya Scodelario for alaska, i always pictured that. That would be so amazing.
But I think apart from that they should pick no name actors. Putting Taylor Lautner in would kill the whole movie.
When is it due to be released, does anyone know?
I pictured alaska dirty blonde the first time I read the book, too, but then the second time I went back and read it I noticed she was described as having auburn/brunette-ish hair, and I think that fits her a lot better.
If anyone's familiar with the youtube channel nigahiga, RYAN HIGA for takumi. he IS takumi.
and emily browning for alaska. she is PERFECT for the role

Haha. I had no idea that Alaska was a brunette! :)
Strangely. Someone suggested Nick and Norah for Pudge and Alaska, respectively. Are you kidding me? KatDennings could NOT be Alaska.
That could just be because I fell in love with Alaska. I'm a girl, but I'm straight I swear. I was Reading the book this summer at the pool. I had borrowed it from the lifeguard. I became enamoured by Alaska. I loved her from the start. When I hit the third or fourth page of "After," I put the book down, walked out, and rode my bike home. I truly believe that John Green broke my heart right there. No lie. She reminded me so much of all of my friends: gorgeous, brilliant, effed up, sexy, sarcastic, drinking, hard family
lives, mature, fun, self-destructive etc. Her death hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn't cry, but my soul did.
Alaska constantly reminds me of Riane, my best and gone friend. Not dead, just not involved.
Ebrrytimr I read it, I find something else to highlight, another line to love.
Thank you John.
I Think Joah Hill (Evan Of "Superbad") Should Play Pudge, Hes Super Skinny And Awkward. It Could Work.
I think that Kristen Stewart would make a really good Alaska in the movie, and maybe Michael Cera for Pudge? Haha, I don't know..
Casting for this would be the most important thing in the whole movie, apart from tastefully doing the "Brady Bunch" and alaska dieing scenes. Let's just cross our fingers and pray that this gets done correctly.
I agree that no-name actors would be the best way to go. I wouldn't watch it if it contained anyone from Twilight. =] I would agree about Michael Cera for Pudge, except I've heard of him. :P
Oh and after reading a comment above about unknown actors sucking I'd like to add something else - they'd have to magically 'discover' a ton of talented unknowns for the cast. Ok? GOOD unknowns.
I see Alaska looking like Misha Barton(the OC).
Pudge looking like Michael Cera(juno).
Lara (camille belle-when a stranger calls).
Takami as Justin chan (twilight-goofy sense of humor)
I couldn't really picture "Chip" all to well, it doesn't really describe him other then being short?
Yep, this book was awesome.
The movie... I'll watch it.
and.... I'm excited.
When the frig is the movie coming out, or at least some details about it?!
Joanna Levesque (aka JoJo) Would make a good Alaska in my opinion!
alaska its freaking awsome and papertowns its really good...katherines, its kind of boring
I think this movie should be made with indy actors...it will be perfect
i have waited 5 years for looking alaska the movie to come out! i want to watch it in another place other than my inside my head! it shouldnt take 5 years to make a movie that is not that difficult to make. this is as anoying as the song tik tok by kesha that wont ever stop playing on the radio. i need my looking for alaska now! pwease =(
2013
2013
are u fcking serious?
2013
imbd says 2013
i cant wait til 2013
we might all die in 2 years
i dont think i can watch looking for alaska in hell/heaven/nothingness
i am prepared to scream in your ear, john, intil you promise to make this movie THIS YEAR!
I don't know how you did it, but the book was absolutely amazing.
I'd heard about it from my friend, and I had already assumed she died, I still cried when she did.
"And there's no sugar coating it: She deserved better friends." is something I heard from the same friend repeatedly, and when I got to that part in the book, I cried even more.
Amazing.
Looking forward to seeing Alaska on the big screen.
KAT DENNINGS AS ALASKA!!!!! When I read the book. She is who I pictured as Alaska.
Are there open casting calls for looking for alaska the movie? If so, please post all the information.
Thanks !
I think that no famous actor/actriss should be in the movie because then it takes away from the actual quality of the movie. and Taylor Lautner? Really? WTF
this movie needs to not be a big time hollywood bullshit movie. it'd fit much better into the whole "indy cult movie" scene. with the unknown, but very skilled actors. my opinion. BUT. i loved the book. my favorite by farrrr. EOS. :)
I love Looking for Alaska. I haven't finish but I am in the after part.....I cannot waitto see the movie so tell me the date it comes out is the USA please and thank you!!!!!
i was so angry at you john when alaska died, because i don't know how you did it, but the way you let her loose on the pages just made me love her so much. i became so attatched to her through pudge's narrative...god it killed me to know that she wouldn't be there when i opened my book again, and i got so completely mental about it that insted of reading sometimes i would cry.. i really felt like i lost a friend the day alaska died. i'm looking forward to the movie, but trying not to have any expectations so that if it's different i won't be dissappointed. i loved an abundance of katherines too, on my way to reading paper towns next. your books always seem to snag at my heart. <3
and yes that really is my name. it's the whole reason i read the book in the first place lol
so i read a previous question "open casting auditions?"
you said maybe, well i would like to know how we would know? check this blog everyday for the next year?
you've probably determined i wanna audition, however slim my chances would be, it would be sick. so being informed would be a delight
u kno, i bet john never even fucking reads this anymore...
definitely michael cera as pudge and aaron yoo as takumi. i'm not sure about the colonel. and i think kristen stewart would be GREAT as alaska. if you think she can't act, you're blind. (see her in something other than 'twilight' if you hate it so much.) also, she's like the posterchild for playing troubled teen girls.
no doubt, kaya scodelario would be an amazing alaska. she can definitely play the part.
