The Mayor of San Diego

Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders explains why he supports gay marriage in a faltering, deeply moving speech. This is difficult to watch without crying. Thanks to Lindsayism for the link.

The email address of the mayor's office, if you'd like to write: jerrysanders -at- sandiego.gov

I wrote to him, too! I meant to mention that. All good men and women should write to him to balance out the nutjobs who will surely also write to him. We shall be distinguished by our correct spelling and grammar, and belief in equal rights for all people.

Thanks, John -- I saw this from Carrie Jones and Jo Knowles, who ganked it from you. I sent Mr. Sanders an email thanking him for his words and his action. He makes me proud to be an American (something that isn't the norm under this administration, I'm sorry to say).

Thank you so much for posting this (yes, I am crying). What a brave and honorable thing the mayor has done!

It's refreshing to see a politician A) open to change; and B) Willing to stand behind a potential devastating political stance for a Republican (well, within their own eyes).

I'm inexplicably glad you posted that, and I'm also glad that at least one Republican knows what real equality is and isn't afraid to stand up for it. Absolutely no good father (or mother) would vote to rid his own daughter (or son) of the right to get married.

I think both you and Hank are heartwarmingly nerdy, smart and hilarious people. I wish you both all the best!

That totally made me cry! I really admire anyone who can learn and grow and stand up for what they believe is right even if it is unpopular.

And I agree with other comments - it is so good to see a Republican who can change their mind when presented with evidence that they should, and who will stand up for what is right in a politically unpopular cause for their party. Makes me think he is a Good Man.
