This evening Paper Towns was named the best young adult mystery of the year by the Mystery Writers of America. I was honored to be nominated alongside Siobhan Dowd's Bog Child, Jack Ferraiolo's The Big Splash, Susan Juby's Getting the Girl, and Margot McDonnell's Torn to Pieces. These are all excellent books, and I was totally stunned-and-thrilled to win.
Now I own a bust. A bust! Who could have ever believed such things were possible?

Congratulations on this award. I just had a 7th grade student of mine ask me if Paper Towns was a mystery. He hadn't read the book, but had heard me talk about it quite a bit. I had never really thought of which genre that it would fit into until then. I obviously told him that it was a mystery and am glad to have been confirmed by this.

They call it a medal, but it looks more like a coin. Imagine accidentally spending your Pulitzer Prize? Um, you know that pack of gum I bought the other day? I think I paid for it with my Pulitzer Prize. OOPS!

John, this has nothing to do with Edgar, and I know you're not doing BEDA anymore 'cause it would be BEDM, and nobody can pronounce that, but I have a situation that could use your advice.
ReplyDeleteYou've said that one of the reasons you became a writer was to prove something to some ex-girlfriends, and also that you once wrote a gloating letter about your glorious success to an old college professor who had underestimated you.
I have a similar tendency to imagine that if I could just reach some goal or other I could throw it in the face of somebody who underestimated me once, and this would make everything worthwhile. While I admit the futility and immaturity of this, it helps me reach goals. I was composing an imaginary spite letter to my fourth grade teacher in my head while waiting in line to collect my Masters degree from Yale.
But alas, I never mailed any of my imaginary letters to my fourth grade teacher, and he died last week. Now what do I do?
Do I feel relieved, and a little sad, that the person who most underestimated me in the whole world is gone? Can I retire my imaginary letter writing habit? Or will this make me lazy and complacent now that I have no one to whom to prove my worth? And in that case, to whom do I direct my gloating now?
Please advise.

Are we still doing questions? I wonder if you'd want to share your thoughts on Jellicoe Road, the recent Printz winner. Overall, I loved the book and characters -- but was somewhat confused. Other people have claimed that the first hundred pages (and alternating story lines, all the names) were confusing. But, I was more confused by the break of tone of the last fourth of it. For everything to be that neatly tied up, maybe? I'm assuming you've read it. What did you think?
Question: what would a good 'after dinner speech' topic be? its supposed to be funny and they told us to think about the audience we want to deliever the speech to (which can be anything). the audience i want consists of an empty room, so im a little stuck for ideas.
