The Edgar Award: I Haz It

This evening Paper Towns was named the best young adult mystery of the year by the Mystery Writers of America. I was honored to be nominated alongside Siobhan Dowd's Bog Child, Jack Ferraiolo's The Big Splash, Susan Juby's Getting the Girl, and Margot McDonnell's Torn to Pieces. These are all excellent books, and I was totally stunned-and-thrilled to win.

Now I own a bust. A bust! Who could have ever believed such things were possible?

    Excellentay! ^^
Is the bust very busty? Or just a normally big bust?
Is the next step up an oscar then? Seeing as it would have the legs...you'll just have to write a movie and find out!

  6. I want a bust; I was unfortunate enough to be born sans torso. But seriously, whose bust did you win?

A bust is a bit like a trophy.
I'm extremely envious, though, as I have always wanted a bust of Edgar Allan Poe (to match the action figure, portrait, and framed - fake - manuscripts).

  17. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I just say, just for the record, that during the scene in Paper Towns when they're at the party and everyone keeps shouting "YES" I totally heard each and every single "YES" as the "YES" at the end of your happy dance? Because I did.

  23. You gotta get a piano now, just so you can put it on there. That is the sole use for busts, I think. Even if they are writers and not composers. Still.

  34. Congratulations on this award. I just had a 7th grade student of mine ask me if Paper Towns was a mystery. He hadn't read the book, but had heard me talk about it quite a bit. I had never really thought of which genre that it would fit into until then. I obviously told him that it was a mystery and am glad to have been confirmed by this.

Hello John Green, I believe congratulations are in order for winning The Edgar Award. LAUREN would probably say to spread the LOVE. Or, more accurately, lurve. I find reading to be quite PEACEful, don't you? It is a good way to get away from your BABY brother, who may or may not be impersonating a bunch of DUCKS. And since you probably already knew this was coming, here is some advice:

John Green, why are you still so surprised that your books win amazing awards?
Surely you should know by now- you're completely awesome.

  43. Congrats on your Edgar Award! Remember that winning isn't everything, but it beats anything that comes in second :) Don't you think everyone should feel that way? For example, in a contest to win a giant coffee cup?!

  44. Congratulations, John! All your books have been an inspiration to me. You truly deserve it.

Also, talking about inspirations, I decided that instead of posting the picture of a kitten (because Lauren did NOT send me!), I'll post an inspirational, last word quote:

"So I know she forgives me, just as I forgive her. Thomas Edison's last words were: 'It's very beautiful over there.' I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful."

  47. Congradulations! But that bust in a marvelous place where everyone can see. I loved Looking for Alaska so I know I'm going to enjoy Paper Towns. Maybe it's have some rubber duckies or a peacefull ended... but probably not. But I'll love it anyway. My friend Lauren said she couldn't agree more.

    Ok, I'm back.
Wow, that's so great!!! And Paper Towns is definitely deserving, as are you (obviously). I'm going through a phase of pimping my copy of PT out to everyone I know, and every person I've lent it to so far (about 5) have phoned me up the evening of the day I gave it to them and gone 'Oh my god it's amazing!!'. So BEDODODODODODO for Margo Roth Spiegelman and John Green!!

(oh, I just Googled 'Margo Roth Spiegelman' to check I'd spelt it rigth cos my brain is all fuzzy today, and it turns out Margo has a Myspace. Who'd have thought. http://www.myspace.com/margorothspiegelman)

  57. Congrats on your Edgar John! I was hoping for a Pulitzer for fiction, but they don't give you a bust, only a medal. It's not even gold, it's silver with gold plating. They call it a medal, but it looks more like a coin. Imagine accidentally spending your Pulitzer Prize? Um, you know that pack of gum I bought the other day? I think I paid for it with my Pulitzer Prize. OOPS!

John, this has nothing to do with Edgar, and I know you're not doing BEDA anymore 'cause it would be BEDM, and nobody can pronounce that, but I have a situation that could use your advice.

You've said that one of the reasons you became a writer was to prove something to some ex-girlfriends, and also that you once wrote a gloating letter about your glorious success to an old college professor who had underestimated you.

I have a similar tendency to imagine that if I could just reach some goal or other I could throw it in the face of somebody who underestimated me once, and this would make everything worthwhile. While I admit the futility and immaturity of this, it helps me reach goals. I was composing an imaginary spite letter to my fourth grade teacher in my head while waiting in line to collect my Masters degree from Yale.

But alas, I never mailed any of my imaginary letters to my fourth grade teacher, and he died last week. Now what do I do?
Do I feel relieved, and a little sad, that the person who most underestimated me in the whole world is gone? Can I retire my imaginary letter writing habit? Or will this make me lazy and complacent now that I have no one to whom to prove my worth? And in that case, to whom do I direct my gloating now?

    Please advise.

Ooo, congrats on the Edgar, John. Yay! I love the name of that award above all others, for some reason. But the "bust" part might freak me out a little. Does it have eyes that mysteriously watch you as you move, like a creepy painting?

    Also...
Are we still doing questions? I wonder if you'd want to share your thoughts on Jellicoe Road, the recent Printz winner. Overall, I loved the book and characters -- but was somewhat confused. Other people have claimed that the first hundred pages (and alternating story lines, all the names) were confusing. But, I was more confused by the break of tone of the last fourth of it. For everything to be that neatly tied up, maybe? I'm assuming you've read it. What did you think?

  69. Question: what would a good 'after dinner speech' topic be? its supposed to be funny and they told us to think about the audience we want to deliever the speech to (which can be anything). the audience i want consists of an empty room, so im a little stuck for ideas.
