Stars

So for those of you who do not devote your every waking hour to the world of book publishing, there are several journals that review books in advance of their publication.* In each issue, these journals give their favorite few titles "starred reviews." (I do not know where this tradition started, but anyway it is nearly** ubiquitous in the world of children's books.)

And although most readers probably don't even know about this weird little publishing tradition of starring certain reviews, it is--as they say--kind of a big deal. It provides, for one thing, a relatively broad (or the broadest we have, anyway) idea of what critics think of a particular title. (So if a book gets five starred reviews, as The Book Thief did, it indicates there is broad agreement that the book is excellent. Which of course it is.)

I have worked as a book reviewer, and still do sometimes, and I think it's important and interesting work. But authors cannot take too much stock in reviews of their own books, because otherwise they will go crazy. I read reviews mostly because I'm interested to see what people respond to and what they find lacking, but I try not to take it personally, good or bad.

All that said: Alaska and Katherines both received three starred reviews in advance of their publication. Word came from Julie today that Paper Towns has just received its fourth star, from the nice people at School Library Journal.

So that is nice, even if it takes five paragraphs to explain why I am happy! (Also: Big congratulations to sometimes sparksflyup commenter Anna Jarzab on the sale of her first novel in a two-book deal to Delacorte!)

* These include, for instance: Booklist, SLJ, Publishers Weekly, Horn Book, The Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books, KLIATT, and VOYA.
**VOYA does not give stars, for instance.

  3. Nice! I guess this is your first 4 star reviewed book then? If it is i hope your happy! It's good you try not to let the reviews get to you. As long as you think you did good is what matters.

  4. Congratulations!

VOYA in fact does give stars, along with its P/Q rating.

  7. I find the random little inside workings of various industries to be fascinating, traditions that don't make much sense are always the best one.

Congratulations on getting four stars :D

  8. John, congratulations!! This is such awesome and exciting news to hear.
I, along with everyone else, can not wait until I get to read "Paper Towns" next month.

Also, John, if you don't mind answering this question, how does one secure a job reviewing books or working for book magazines such as Booklist, etc.?? I know you did this for a while, and I am kind of interested in this field and it might be something I go into after graduating from college.
If you can shed some light on this, that would be awesome!!!

  14. i was carrying a copy of "katherines" down state street in downtown chicago and a fundraiser from the ACLU stopped me to ask for money. i said "sorry, not today." he responded, "come on, man..." then he gestured at my book and said, "you know john green would want you to help us out!" the guy might not even know who "john green" is, but...

what do you think of this?

Is it weird to be THIS happy for an author? Oh well...

  27. Congratulations John! Now I really can't wait to read it. Alas, I will have to. As I have preordered it on Amazon and live in Australia it will probably arrive smack bang in the middle of my exam period, but I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

  28. Congrats, John! Starred reviews definitely catch my eye on dust jackets when deciding on a book, so I guess I have no option now but to pre-order.

  29. That's great! Congratulations!

I hate that you teased me with the first chapter in Abundance of Katherines and I can't read it yet... my OCD is killing me.

I personally get pissed when I read the reviews of books that I have read and loved and they don't have an ample number of stars... communists should NOT be allowed to write reviews :-P

  31. Four-star authors! May they have as much influence as the generals with the same number of stars.

    Congratulations!

  32. Sweet! And well-earned!

  33. Congrats, John.

Currently considering myself lucky to be working at a bookstore and to be able to read a complimentary copy of it at the moment. It deserves the stars.

Great "clues" throughout which I hope some readers decide to investigate for themselves.

I know I'll have a book to recommend for a good while whenever someone asks me the eternal bookstore question: "What have you read good lately?"
